NBA Overview
NBA stands for National Basketball Association. It is a professional basketball league in the United States and Canada. The NBA is the most popular basketball league in the world, and it is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States.
The Basketball Association of America (BAA) founded the NBA in 1946. The BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the NBA. The NBA currently has 30 teams, 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada. The NBA divides its teams into two conferences, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Each conference is then divided into three divisions.
The NBA season runs from October to April. The regular season consists of 82 games for each team. The top eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs. The NBA playoffs are a single-elimination tournament, and the winner of the NBA Finals is crowned the NBA champion.
The most successful team in NBA history is the Boston Celtics, who have won 17 championships. The Los Angeles Lakers are second with 16 championships, followed by the Chicago Bulls with 6 championships.
