On that morning Charles and his wife Camilla travelled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. As they arrived the cornation begun shortly, which was led by the current Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.
First was the recognition. The archbishop presents the monarch to the assembly gathered in the abbey. They shout, “God save the king!” and trumpets sound.
Second, the archbishop administers the oath, in which the monarch sworn to uphold the law and the Church of England. Third comes the anointing, with the archbishop painting the monarch with holy oil, symbolizing the king’s consecration as monarch by God.
Traditionally, the anointing is considered too sacred to show to the public, so it’s likely that Charles was veiled from the cameras with a canopy of gold cloth during this portion of the proceedings.
In the investiture, the king sat on the Coronation Chair to receive the presentation of the Royal Orb, the two Sovereign’s Sceptres, and the crown.
The sixth and final step in the ceremony was closing procession,where Charles and Camilla left Westminster Abbey and go back to Buckingham Palace.
