Her career began in local television news in Atlanta, and in 1976, she was hired by NBC News as a White House correspondent, where she covered the Carter administration for six years. She subsequently transitioned to a foreign correspondent role for NBC.
In 1983, Woodruff joined PBS as the chief Washington correspondent for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and also anchored the award-winning documentary series, “Frontline with Woodruff.” In 1993, she moved to CNN, where she served as an anchor and senior correspondent for 12 years. Woodruff returned to the NewsHour in 2007 and, in 2013, she and Gwen Ifill made history as the first two women to co-anchor a national news broadcast. Following Ifill’s passing in 2016, Woodruff became the sole anchor.
