After graduating from high school, Yates attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she studied communications. She also danced with the SMU Dance Company. After graduating from SMU, Yates moved to Chicago and danced with the Hubbard Street Dance Company. She then gained her Equity card by performing on a cruise ship for 6 months.

After Contact, Yates continued to work in theater, appearing in shows such as The Full Monty, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Legally Blonde. She has also appeared in films and television shows, including National Treasure, Deception, and Grand Theft Auto IV.
