Zimtschnecken (Cinamon Rolls) Recipe

Zimtschnecken (Cinamon Rolls) also known as Cinnamon Rolls, are a delectable and indulgent treat that is loved for its soft, fluffy dough and sweet, cinnamon-infused filling. Originating from Sweden, these rolls have gained popularity worldwide for their irresistible aroma and delicious taste. Here’s a recipe to help you create your own homemade Zimtschnecken:

Dough Ingredients:

  • 2 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 and 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Filling Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Glaze Ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Zimtschnecken (Cinamon Rolls) Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt.

In a small saucepan, heat the milk until it is warm but not boiling. Remove from heat and add the melted butter. Let it cool for a few minutes.

Pour the milk and butter mixture into the dry ingredients. Add the egg as well. Stir until the dough starts to come together.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for kneading.

Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out into a rectangular shape, approximately 12×16 inches.

Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture over the buttered dough, ensuring it covers the surface completely.

Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Cut the log into 12 equal-sized slices using a sharp knife or dental floss. Place the slices in a greased baking pan, leaving a little space between each roll.

Cover the baking pan with a clean kitchen towel and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the Zimtschnecken for approximately 20-25 minutes or until they turn golden brown.

While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze by combining the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract (if using) in a bowl. Stir until smooth and creamy.

Once the Zimtschnecken are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls.

Serve the Zimtschnecken fresh and enjoy their warm, gooey goodness. They are best enjoyed on the same day they are made.
