Stephen Cole Career
After earning his National Certificate for the Training of Journalists at Cardiff University, Cole launched his journalism career. He initially worked as a print reporter on national news and sports for the Caters News Agency. His early experiences included covering the aftermath and trials related to the Birmingham pub bombings of 1974, having been in the city for another assignment on the night of the attack. Subsequently, from 1978 to 1989, Cole transitioned to television news, contributing reports for both ITN and BBC Nationwide.
In 1989, Cole took on the role of an anchor for Sky News, Britain’s first 24-hour television news channel. During that period, he reported on major global events: the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Soviet Union’s dissolution, Gulf War, and Bosnian War.
In 1994, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he became an anchor for CNN International as part of a channel relaunch and rebranding effort.
Returning to the UK in 1996, Cole joined BBC World News as an anchor. In May 2005, during a one-day strike by 11,000 journalists, producers, and technicians, Cole, as a non-union member under contract, stepped in to anchor the flagship Six O’Clock and Ten O’Clock News on BBC One temporarily, filling in for regular newsreaders Sian Williams, George Alagiah, and Huw Edwards.
In 2000, BBC management approached Cole to create a new show, letting him choose between business and Information Technology (IT). He opted for the latter, leading to the birth of BBC Click Online, later renamed Click. During this period, Cole conducted interviews with prominent figures in the tech industry, including Bill Gates and Larry Ellison.
With the launch of Al Jazeera‘s English-language service in 2006, Cole, along with other British broadcasters like David Frost, was swiftly recruited as a senior anchor and news editor, partly due to the exposure he gained during the BBC strike. He reported from the field on events like the Group of Seven meetings, World Economic Forum in Davos, and antiquities trade in Bulgaria.
From 2019 to 2022, Cole served as executive producer and host of CGTN Europe’s flagship current affairs program, The Agenda. Since his retirement, Cole has remained active as a guest lecturer, event host, and moderator.
